Bivouac or Campaign: This suggested itinerary will give you a chance to become well acquainted with Appomattox at a leisurely pace:
Day One 
3 pm: Assemble your troops at the Atwood Wilson House.  Refresh and investigate your headquarters.
4 pm: Walk one block to Visitors Center in Downtown Appomattox.  Take the Historic Homes Walking Tour.  A Lazy stroll of 45 minutes, not counting the antique shopping along the way.
5 pm: Back in headquarters for some relaxation and refreshments before dinner.  
6 pm: Dinner at the Babcock House, Granny Bee’s or the Corner Grill. Grocery Stores are nearby if you choose to do some light cooking.
8 pm: Relax in the sauna or whirlpool bath before retiring.
Day Two 
Whenever 
you wake:
It is tough to sleep late, because the birds start singing early. If you awake early make yourself some coffee, sit on the deck and listen to the birds. There is news on the TV, a newspaper box and Corner Grill across the street. You might also enjoy Baine's Books, a block away on Main Street with excellent coffee
and cappuccino.
10 am: Visit the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park, where General Lee surrendered to General Grant.
12 Noon: Retreat to your headquarters at the Atwood Wilson House. It’s only 2.4 miles.
1 pm: Visit the Appomattox County Historical Museum
3 pm: Visit Steins Unlimited.
5 pm: Recall the troops to your headquarters on Church Street. 
7 pm: Try dinner at a different place than before. Be adventuresome, it's your vacation!
Day Three 
Sleep till
whenever
Early risers might enjoy watching the local residents who convene for breakfast and conversation at Granny Bee’s in downtown Appomattox. It's about a block away....An easy walk. Don’t believe all the stories you overhear.
10 am: Try a little antique shopping at "The Gallery" or visit the Craft shops on Main Street. You might want to purchase a gift to take home home. "Country Charm" is the place to start.
1 pm: Visit Red Hill, Home of Patrick Henry, about 25 miles South.
3 pm: Visit Clover Hill Living History Museum for a glimpse of a vintage 1870 village.
5 pm: Dine at Granny Bee’s or try the Babcock House for a romantic dinner experience. If you wish, you can drive 21 miles West to Lynchburg or 30 easy miles East to Farmville.
8 pm: The Whirlpool tub will sooth your tired legs.
Departure Day 
By now you must know that Appomattox is laid back and friendly. Enjoy your last leisurely morning in Historic Appomattox. Take the walking tour again and notice how many people wave to you.

 


Four Night Campaign or Seven Night Siege: Use the itinerary above and then add excursions from the list below to complete your vacation adventure.

 

See Appomattox first but if you have extra days you can maintain your headquarters here and visit any of the numerous attractions within a 75 mile radius of Appomattox. Here are some suggestions which will allow you to sleep late, enjoy an excursion and be back in Appomattox for relaxing on the deck before bedtime.

 

To the West: Located within an hour’s drive
1. National D-Day Memorial, Point of Honor, Diamond Hill, Poplar Forest (Summer Home of Thomas Jefferson) and a drive to Peaks of Otter Lodge for Lunch, then drive southwest on the Blue Ridge Parkway (A special treat in the autumn or when the Rhododendrons or Azaleas are blooming in the spring). When you reach US 460 turn East and return to Appomattox
2. If it is Saturday, start out with a visit to the Lynchburg Community Market, then do Point of Honor, Diamond Hill and Poplar Forest.
3. If you have a child who is visiting one of the Lynchburg area Colleges, you might want to spend a day touring the campuses of other nearby schools such as Lynchburg College, Liberty University, Randolph College, Sweetbriar and Central Virginia Community College. You can do this and still be back in Appomattox for dinner and a chance to review the options with your student.
